Gem

Protagonist · Agent

"The girl built for shadows, shaped by discipline, and capable of becoming anything she's asked to be — even when she barely understands herself."

Presence & Physicality

Gem is petite and deceptively youthful in appearance — fine-boned, with large green eyes that shift between sharp intelligence and unsettling blankness depending on what she needs them to convey. Her small frame carries an economy of movement that reads as stillness until she's in motion, at which point even trained observers tend to miss details. She has the kind of face that people want to trust, which she uses deliberately.

Background

Raised by a drug-addicted mother in an environment of neglect and survival, Gem learned early that the world operated on transactions. She became a skilled thief by necessity — not of the opportunistic kind, but methodical and patient. She self-educated online from the age of seven, filling gaps her mother's chaos left with a voracious, unguided curiosity that built connections across mathematics, languages, behavioural psychology, and lock mechanics in equal measure.

She had no formal schooling to speak of, no mentor, and no model for what a future looked like. What she had was an eidetic memory, an instinct for reading people, and a talent for becoming whoever a room needed her to be.

Recruitment & Training

Gem was recruited into William Boleyn's organisation after her abilities were flagged through covert assessment channels. The submission training program was not designed with her in mind — it was designed for women who already understood structure. Gem arrived without framework, without language for what was being asked of her, and proceeded to exceed every metric by routes her assessors hadn't anticipated.

What emerged during training was a set of neural capacities that the organisation had not encountered before in this configuration: the ability to transmute pain stimulus into suspended awareness, to amplify sensory pleasure as a control mechanism, and to achieve deep trance integration on demand. These weren't trained in — they were revealed.

Capabilities

  • Eidetic memory — total recall of sensory and textual data
  • Mimic abilities — voice, movement, mannerism and accent replication
  • Neural Resonance: Pain Transmutation — sustained pain converted to heightened focus
  • Neural Resonance: Pleasure Amplification — voluntary escalation of pleasure response as an interrogation and influence tool
  • Neural Resonance: Trance Integration — rapid self-induced trance states usable in active environments
  • Subdermal lock-pick implant — biometric-triggered, surgically placed
  • Infiltrator suit — adaptive compression garment rated for covert fieldwork

Psychology

Gem processes the world through pattern and utility. Emotional experience exists for her on a slight delay — she registers what happened before she registers how she feels about it, and often chooses not to complete that second step. This is not coldness. It is a survival architecture that has never been dismantled because nothing safe enough to dismantle it in has presented itself.

She is not naive about what she is being used for. She made a conscious decision to step into the organisation's frame, and she operates within it with clear-eyed awareness of the transaction. What complicates this is that she is beginning, slowly and against her own preference, to want things that don't fit a transactional model.

"She doesn't know what she is yet. That's what makes her extraordinary — and what makes her dangerous."
